We have all heard that  a minimum amount of alcohol per day  is recommended due to the health benefits it brings. Of course, sometimes we can enjoy this magical taste of  weakly fermented fruits , but like anything else, we should not overdo it with this substance.

Today we will  look in more detail at red wine  and how one glass of it a day can improve our health, detoxify and restore us. Experts say drinking a glass of wine a day can  help prevent some diseases.

It contains properties that are believed to help protect against certain cancers and improve heart and mental health. If you want to  drink a glass of wine to  improve your health or because you just love the taste of it, it’s good to know a little more  about what vintage it was made from.

Here are some of the more famous types of wine

White wines

The most popular varieties of white wine are:

  • Riesling
  • Chardonnay
  • pinot grigio
  • chenin blanc
  • sauvignon blanc and nutmeg

Their  taste profiles  range from sweet to dry, and can be slightly sour. You can enjoy their light flavors by  consuming them chilled and straight from the glass , or added to punch or sangria.

If you use white wine for cooking, choose one that is dry instead of one with hints of oak or oil, because these flavors can  interfere with the taste of the food.

Red wines

Among the types of red wines the most popular are:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Pinot Noir
  • merlot
  • cheese

Their tastes range from sweet to complex, to very dry. Although many enthusiasts believe that red wine should be  served at room temperature,  others like it slightly chilled.

But as with many things,  personal choice is paramount,  so drink your red wine at the temperature you like best. In cooking, red wines are suitable to be added to stews, oily fish and heavy sauces.

Sparkling wines

Sparkling wines  are usually associated with festive occasions  – parties, birthdays, weddings and New Year’s Eve. World-famous types are – champagne, kava, prosecco, pet-nat.

Rose

Rose wines are  made from red grapes,  but the skin and bunches are removed in two to three days during the preparation process. This contact, although brief, allows the wine to  acquire some of the colors of the grapes.

This gives it a  pink hue  that can go from light to dark. Most rosettes are light, but can also be dry or slightly sweet in taste.

Benefits of taking one glass of red wine a day

You may have healthier intestines

A study from  2019 , published in the journal  Gastroenterology,  found that people who drank red wine had  a greater variety of good bacteria in their gut  than people who did not drink red wine. Researchers have not seen the same effect with white wine or other types of alcohol.

The presence of more diverse bacteria (and more of some species than others) is thought to help digestion, immune function and weight management.  Unhealthy balance of intestinal bacteria  is associated with weight gain and susceptibility to certain diseases.

In the study, red wine drinkers were also  less likely to be obese and showed lower levels of bad cholesterol than those who did not drink it. However, wine does not need to be a  daily drink.  Researchers have found that drinking red wine even once every two weeks is enough to see the effect.

You may have a healthier heart

The ethanol and polyphenols in wine can together help to  protect against chronic cardiovascular disease,  especially heart disease. And the antioxidant resveratrol, which is found in red wines, has  stimulating benefits for the heart.

Tannins and procyanidins are associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and  type 2 diabetes.  The antioxidants in wine increase heart-healthy  HDL  cholesterol, as well as keeping the immune system strong.

HDL helps prevent the buildup of “bad” plaque in the arteries, which can also help  prevent heart attacks and strokes.

You may have healthier bones

Researchers have found that  heavy drinking  appears to be linked to osteoporosis (thinning and weakening of the bones). However, studies have found that bones can be healthier in menopausal women who  drink an average of about one drink a day.

A study from  2017  supports the conclusion that  light drinking is associated with better bone density  in menopausal women. They have increased bone turnover, a sign of bone remodeling that helps build new bone and prevents bone loss.

But it is also said that alcohol can  affect the absorption of calcium in the stomach,  which over time can affect the ability to build healthy bones. The most important thing you need to know is that regular physical activity plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy bones.

Your mind may stay sharper longer

It is true that brain function may decline with age.  But moderate alcohol consumption – for example, by drinking a glass of wine at dinner – may be associated with a slower decline.

An analysis involving nearly  1,500 people  found that people aged  65  or older who  enjoyed alcoholic beverages  in mild to moderate amounts, especially wine, had a higher total brain volume than humans, who do not drink.

Although total brain volume is not exactly the same as cognitive function, and research cannot prove that  alcohol is the cause of the discovery,  it is known that the brain atrophies in conditions such as  Alzheimer’s disease  and dementia, so the greater total brain volume is a good sign.

Attention! Moderation is key to wine consumption

Chronic and excessive alcohol intake  is associated with heart failure, which in medicine is known as cardiomyopathy and heart failure.

Drinking red wine  is not only a way to have fun or relax after a hard day, but also a chance to cleanse your body. There are many studies that prove how just  one glass of red wine a day  can improve cholesterol levels and even fight urinary tract infections.

There are many benefits to drinking a glass of wine, as long as you don’t overdo it.

What are the harms of excessive wine consumption?

However, what can happen to you if you start  systematically drinking more wine  than the recommended glass?

We are not talking here about the severe forms of social degradation that those who systematically overdo with this  intoxicating drink inevitably reach.

You may have poorer sleep quality

Many people have the feeling that a glass of wine in the evening  helps them fall asleep easier.  Drinking alcohol at bedtime, however, is associated with slower wave patterns of sleep, known as delta activity – deep sleep that allows  memory formation. .

During this time, alpha activity is involved, which is another type of brain pattern.  Alpha and delta activity in the brain together can inhibit restorative sleep.

You can affect your mental health

The relationship with alcohol and mood  can be complex and can vary depending on how much you drink and your personal factors. You are probably already familiar with the  warm and happy feeling  that drinking wine can often bring.

This is related to the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and opioid peptides, which can be released when you drink alcohol.  But wine can also help some people calm down, but not others.

A study found that  light and moderate drinkers  had a reduced risk of developing depression compared to both heavier and non-heavy drinkers.

You may have a higher risk of breast cancer

While alcohol use in general is actually associated with an increased risk of many cancers (including cancer of the reproductive system), it is possible that wine in particular  has protective benefits.  Resveratrol in red wine has anti-cancer properties, so it does a better option if you are going to drink alcohol.

Studies show that  moderate drinking of red wine  can reduce the risk of developing ovarian cancer compared to women who do not drink wine. However, experts note that drinking more than a glass a day can  increase the risk of breast cancer  and other cancers.

Studies show that one to two drinks (or more) of alcohol a day can increase the risk of breast cancer. A meta-analysis found that women who drank alcohol were  11%  more likely than non-drinkers to develop breast cancer. It is best – as always –  to practice moderation.

So, can you continue to drink your daily glass of wine? The simple answer is yes!  Not so simple answer – in the end it’s up to you.

Research still supports the idea that  light to moderate amounts of red wine  (one glass per night) have mostly beneficial or neutral effects on our health.

In general, even if red wine can have some  positive effects on your body,  but it’s not a habit you should start if you don’t already drink.

Healthy eating and maintaining physical activity are always the best idea, but if you happen to enjoy a glass of wine, there’s nothing wrong with that.  Moderation is key!
