Is it healthy to drink our coffee on an empty stomach?
Здравословно ли е да пием кафето си на гладно?

Coffee is such a popular beverage, that its consumption levels are second only to water in some countries. Many people like to drink coffee on an empty stomach in the morning. But some say it could be detrimental to health.

Let’s first look at the list of its health benefits. Due to its high levels of antioxidants and beneficial nutrients, coffee actually seems to be quite beneficial.

Studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of several serious diseases.

Here are some of the benefits of coffee:

  • Can improve energy levels and promote mental clarity

Coffee raises energy levels. This is because it contains a stimulant called caffeine – the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world.

After drinking coffee, caffeine is absorbed into your bloodstream. From there, it travels to your brain. In the brain, caffeine blocks the neurotransmitter inhibitor adenosine. When this happens, the amount of other neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine increases, leading to an increase in neurons.

Many controlled studies in humans have shown that coffee improves various aspects of brain function, including:

  • memory
  • mood
  • energy levels
  • reaction time
  • general mental function

  • It can protect you from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease and the leading cause of dementia worldwide.

This condition usually affects people over the age of 65 and there is no known cure. However, there are a few things you can do to prevent the disease from occurring in the first place. This includes the usual healthy habits, such as healthy eating and exercise, but drinking coffee can also be incredibly effective.

Several studies have shown that people who drink coffee have up to a 65% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

  • May protect the liver

The liver is an amazing organ that performs over 2,000 important functions.

Several common diseases mainly affect the liver, including hepatitis, fatty liver disease and many others.

Many of these conditions can lead to cirrhosis, in which your liver is destroyed, but coffee can protect you from this. People who drink 4 or more glasses a day have up to 80% lower risk.

Italian researchers have found that coffee consumption reduces the risk of liver cancer by about 40%. Some results suggest that people who drink three cups a day have about a 50% lower risk.

  • Can help burn fat

Caffeine is found in almost every fat burning food supplement and for good reason. This is one of the few natural substances proven to help burn fat.

Some studies show that caffeine can increase metabolism by 3-11%. Other studies show that caffeine can specifically increase fat burning by up to 10% in obese people and up to 29% in obese people .

However, these effects may be reduced by prolonged coffee drinking.

  • Contains essential nutrients

One cup of coffee contains:

  • Riboflavin (vitamin B2): 11% of the reference daily intake
  • Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5): 6% of the reference daily intake
  • Manganese and potassium: 3% of the reference daily intake
  • Magnesium and niacin (vitamin B3): 2% of the reference daily intake

Although these percentages may not seem like much, most people drink a few cups of coffee a day, which allows this data to accumulate quickly.

Type 2 diabetes is a major health problem,  currently affecting millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by elevated blood sugar levels caused by insulin resistance or a reduced ability to secrete insulin.

People who drink coffee have a significantly reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

Studies show that people who drink the most coffee have a 23-50% lower risk of getting the disease. One study even showed a reduction of up to 67%.

According to studies in a total of 457,922 people, each cup of coffee is associated with a 7% reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

  • Coffee can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease

Research on the link between coffee and heart health has not always been consistent. But there was no evidence of harm in otherwise healthy people.

In recent years, the accumulation of research suggests that coffee may indeed have several benefits for heart health. In particular, extensive systematic reviews show that:

An analysis of studies with 1,279,804 participants found that those who drank 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day had the lowest risk of cardiovascular disease.

However, more coffee is not necessarily very healthy.

A few glasses can really benefit heart health, but increasing consumption over 4-5 glasses a day can have an adverse effect.

Why is it not good to drink coffee on an empty stomach?

For most of us, coffee is a big part of our daily lives. Unfortunately, drinking coffee on an empty stomach or early in the morning before breakfast can increase cortisol levels in the body. From the moment you open your eyes in the morning, your body begins to secrete cortisol. It is a hormone that is responsible for regulating your immune response, metabolism and stress factor.

If you load your body with caffeine on an empty stomach when cortisol levels are high, you will put your body under even more stress.

Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can also interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals that come from food. So it is important, if you are going to drink coffee at all, to drink it on a full stomach or while eating. It will also reduce the excess amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Because coffee irritates stomach acid, you are more likely to get heartburn and even develop stomach ulcers, which is also true of decaffeinated.

When coffee enters an empty stomach, it causes a great shock to the system. While the antioxidant properties derived primarily from chlorogenic acid are great for overall health and even for the treatment of certain diseases such as colon cancer, they are not as good on an empty stomach.

When our food does not stay long enough in the intestines, vitamins and minerals are not absorbed properly, leaving us with nutritional deficiencies.

Coffee also speeds up the process of removing fluids from our body, causing dehydration, but also does not give the kidneys enough time to absorb calcium, magnesium, zinc or other important minerals. Magnesium deficiency is clinically associated with a wide variety of negative health conditions, including anxiety and depression, asthma, blood clots, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, infertility, osteoporosis and migraine.

Is it healthy to drink our coffee on an empty stomach?

It is clear that coffee on an empty stomach has a bad effect on our physical health, but it also affects our mental health.

Additionally, there are studies that link pitto coffee on an empty stomach to excess stomach acid production and depression, especially when drunk in large quantities. Studies have found that caffeine mimics feelings of anxiety and even panic attacks. Symptoms may include:

  • anxiety
  • fear
  • trembling
  • flushed face
  • accelerated pulse

And if you’re already prone to anxiety, you’re even more vulnerable to the effects of coffee, especially if you drink it on an empty stomach.
