We all have seen advertisements claiming, “Eat all you want, do not exercise, this pill will help you lose all excess weight!”.
Unfortunately, research does not support such claims. Slimming pills fall in the category of dietary supplements, not medicine and that means their manufacturers are not obliged to prove that slimming pills are effective.
Indeed, currently there is no scientific evidence that weight loss products are really effective.
Moreover, fat burning pills are expensive. What you get, however, in exchange for the high price may not be worth the money invested. Although there is little evidence that some of these products have minimal effect, none of them is the magic pill, that will make you lose weight while snacking on potato chips in front of the TV.
Even experts who do not deny and support these products agree that, to be effective, weight loss pills should be combined with proper nutrition and regular workouts. If you have the will to follow specific diet and to exercise regularly and have the extra resources, then you may check whether some of the safest products of this type will support your efforts to lose excess weight. But if you have no intention of sticking to diet and exercise, may it would be wiser to save your money for something else. Everything comes down to healthy balanced nutrition high in complex carbohydrates and workouts.
Weight loss pills can be an option for patients who have serious health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol and cannot control their weight with diets and exercise alone. Slimming medications should not be used as a substitute for healthy eating and regular exercise programs.
For a year, people taking weight loss pills can lose 5 to 10% of their original weight, but only when they use them as a supplemental part of a diet and exercise plan.
One of the biggest mistakes made by many people is to think they can just take a pill for fat loss and achieve the desired weight loss. They think fat loss pills are the miracle needed to achieve the dream body. But the truth is that adhering to limited calories is 80% of the fight against unwanted weight. If you can follow similar diet persistently, then you have won 80% of the battle. The other 20 percent include an adequate activity level! Only under these conditions weight loss supplements can aid in the process of losing weight.
Fat burning pills can help speed up fat loss, but they only work if we stick to proper nutrition. Slimming supplements themselves affect our body in different ways. Fat burning pills can increase energy, reduce appetite, stimulate body fat to be used for energy, and even speed up metabolism, so you can burn more calories throughout the day. But if you take such a pill and then eat hamburgers, pizza and pasta, you will not lose any fat.
Pay attention to your eating habits and decide whether they meet your goal of fat loss. To get rid of fat and enjoy toned and athletic physique, you need to eat fewer calories to consume many proteins and maintain healthy eating habits with slowly degradable carbohydrates, healthy fats and lots of fresh vegetables. When you are sure about your diet and have control over it, you can turn to weight loss supplements.
What are slimming pills?
A weight loss supplement is any oral product that includes nutrients, herbs, or other ingredients that add to your diet and help the body lose weight . Not all supplements are designed to promote weight loss, some supplements provide valuable nutrient substitutes for those who do not get enough nutrients in their daily diets.
The weight loss supplement may include:
- Amino acids (building blocks of proteins);
- Glandular extracts;
People take supplements for weight loss for many different reasons: weight loss or weight gain, recovery of lost nutrients, building muscle mass, maintaining physical functions such as vision, sleep improvement, or energy enhancement.
Just because weight loss pills are sold in attractive packaging in pharmacies or online does not mean that they are safe. Many consumers are unaware that products sold as weight loss supplements are not subject to regulation. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to prove that the additive is safe but not all manufacturers comply with this requirement. Many manufacturers are blamed for making false claims about their products, adding pharmaceutical ingredients to their additives or producing additives in dangerous conditions.
How do weight loss pills work?
If you are looking for dietary supplements that will help you lose weight, you definitely have plenty of options to choose from. Manufacturers of “magic pills, claim that the ingredients in their supplements can help you achieve results such as:
- Reducing the desire for food (bee pollen, dill);
- Create a sense of satiety without eating much (guar gum, psyllium);
- Accelerate metabolism (caffeine, guarana, synephrine, B- group vitamins);
- Reduce the synthesis of fat in the body (green tea, hydrocyanic acid, flax seed).
Weight loss supplements are available in almost every form that can be taken orally, from pills and capsules to powders, liquids and teas. Some products are taken with food, others are taken instead of food. Slimming pills are supposed to help you lose weight by stimulating your metabolism or influencing the way your body uses energy.
The main ingredient in some supplements for example is caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant that can help burn fat through a process called thermogenesis. But, it is important to be aware that the risks of taking these stimulants may outweigh the benefits.
How effective are weight loss pills?
Slimming pills are not effective for everyone. Typically, the safe weight to lose per week is within one kilogram. Weight loss pills usually lead to weight loss of 5 to 10% for a period of 12 months when used as part of a diet and exercise plan.
For a person with weight of 90 kg, weight loss will be from 5 to 10 kg per year, which falls within the safe range of weight loss. Although this rate of weight loss seems small or unsatisfactory, it may be enough to help lower blood pressure or have a positive effect on blood sugar.
While some of these slimming pills contain “the best” ingredients to promote weight loss, they actually do not lead to drastic results. Before taking such pills it is recommended to consult a doctor to discuss the safety and effectiveness of the weight loss pills and to learn more about the side effects of these supplements.
Slimming pills containing caffeine
As noted, many pills contain caffeine as a separate ingredient or in the form of a herb such as guarana or yerba mate. As a stimulant, caffeine stimulates metabolism but is generally not enough to cause significant weight loss.
Caffeine-containing herbs, according to a study from 2001, published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, can help weight loss by keeping the stomach full for a longer time. However, they can cause mild but adverse effects, such as nervousness or more serious side effects in the brain and taking this type pills is not recommended.
Green tea is also a source of caffeine, but this is not its only active ingredient believed to help weight loss. Tea contains also catechins – phyto chemicals which can speed up metabolism.
In accordance with a 2012 study published in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, despite that green tea is a source of nutrients that help you burn calories, it has no significant weight loss effect. Researchers from this study, including a total of 14 studies and 1,562 participants, concluded that weight loss from green tea was so small that it was not clinically significant.
Green coffee bean extract
Green coffee beans extract is a caffeine source and contains large amounts of chlorogenic acid. According to Office of Dietary Supplements, this acid helps prevent fat build-up.
Although it seems that green coffee beans extract is promising for weight loss, there are very few studies on its efficacy. In order to better evaluate how green coffee bean extract can help to lose weight, further clinical trials are needed.
White beans are a legume from Central and South America that prevents decomposition and absorption of carbohydrates and suppress appetite. In weight loss pills legumes are listed as, phaseolus vulgaris. When taken as part of a diet with lowered calorie content, the participants in a small research published in 2014 in Obesity, lost 3 kilos for 12 weeks compared to 1 kilo in the control group.
However, according to a 2011 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, a great deal of the research on white beans and its effect on weight loss is insufficient and it is recommended to conduct larger and more rigorous studies to understand its effectiveness.
CLA – Conjugated linoleic acid
Connected (conjugated) linoleic acid, (CLA) is made from linoleic acid and occurs naturally in animal foods such as milk and beef. Scientists believe CLA helps reduce weight by destroying fat cells.
According to a study from 2012, published in Nutrition, CLA supplements help accelerating weight loss in people with high rates of obesity.
Researchers, however, note that although participants in the study have lost weight , they have not lost a significant percentage of kilograms, suggesting that CLA is not a magic wand for significant weight loss. According to the researchers, CLA may increase the level of triglycerides and bad cholesterol in the body while lowering good cholesterol. If you are worried about your cholesterol levels, avoid this weight loss option.
Pyruvate is a chemical substance synthesized by our body during glucose production. Pyruvate is found in some weight loss pills, usually in the form of calcium pyruvate.
Pyruvate may accelerate the potential for burning fat and our metabolism, which in theory would help us to lose weight. While pyruvate contributes to the promotion of minimal weight loss, current studies are still insufficient according to study from 2014 in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. And as with many of the ingredients found in slimming pills pyruvate also needs more research to further evaluate its effect on losing weight.
Chromium is an essential mineral that helps control blood sugar levels and allows for our active way of life by giving our cells access to glucose, fast and easy source of energy. It can help increasing our lean body mass and burn more calories.
According to a study from 2013, published in Obesity Review, which examined the results of 11 feasibility studies, chromium supplements lead to weight loss. However, like other weight loss pills, chromium does not lead to significant weight loss and it seems that in the best case chromium supplements have modest results.
Side effects of weight loss pills
If you want to lose weight naturally, it is better to do so through the food you consume. There is still little research on the actual effectiveness of weight loss supplements and although some of them support the process accumulation of more muscle and fat loss, proper nutrition and training can achieve the same effect, but without the undesirable and still unclear side effects. So, instead of taking weight loss supplements, pay more attention to your nutrition.
Why weight loss pills may be dangerous?
Many weight loss supplements are harmless, and some can even be effective in creating a feeling of satiety, burning fat or speeding up metabolism. But some of the popular ingredients of weight loss pills are prohibited by the FDA due to the following side effects:
- Increased heartbeat;
- High blood pressure;
- Kidney problems;
- Liver problems;
- Rectal bleeding.
For people with strong desire to lose excess weight, weight loss supplements seem like a magical solution. Manufacturers of these products make extravagant promises about the properties of their pills, but most of these claims are not supported by clinical studies.
In fact, the pills that promise to help you lose weight or burn excess fat can have hidden dangers for your health. Despite the risks of taking dietary supplements for weight loss, the demand for these products continues to increase, especially among people with eating disorders. It is exactly people with such disorders that most often decide to take such weight loss pills, herbal supplements or medicines with or without prescription.
